A Simple Monthly Bookkeeping Routine for Small Business Owners
Bookkeeping becomes a burden when it piles up. A small routine, done monthly, keeps it manageable.
Week one: close out last month
- Download or confirm the statements for each business account.
- Record anything you paid in cash or from a personal account.
- Reconcile each account: check that your records match the statement.
Week two: review the money
- Check which invoices are unpaid, and follow up on the late ones.
- Review bills coming due so nothing is paid late.
Week three: look at the numbers
- Look at income and expenses for the month. Is anything surprisingly high or low?
- Note questions to ask your bookkeeper or accountant.
Week four: tidy up
- File receipts and documents where you can find them.
- Make a short list of anything unusual coming next month, such as a large purchase.
If it feels like too much
That is a common sign it is time to hand something off. See monthly bookkeeping or book an intro call.
